This is a circular walk through mixed, ancient woodland.

Park in the centre of Mid Calder and walk down past the Torphichen Arms. Before the large stone bridge over the Almond River turn right at the Almondell and Calderwood sign and descend down steps towards the river. Cross over the small steel bridge to the right and follow the signposts with the green arrows for the Birch Trail.

Keeping to the left hand path continue up through open countryside and mixed woodland. Continue to follow the green arrows to complete the loop back to the start.

To extend this walk, ascend the steps to the top of large stone bridge over the Calder Water, cross the road and follow the path through Almondell & Calderwood park. Follow the circular route through the park back to the start of walk.
