The Pentland Hills Regional Park is a living, working landscape, which offers great opportunities to experience and enjoy the outdoors. See our Pentland Map.

With 10,000 hectares of countryside and 100km of paths, the Regional Park is a great place to come walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and orienteering.

Public transport allows visitors the opportunity to start at one side of the park and finish at the other. Natural Heritage Officers are on hand daily to offer information and guidance: provide events, guided walks and biodiversity surveys and undertake  practical conservation tasks with voluntary and community groups.

You will find all our paths have markers on them to help you stay on the right track. In addition to this there are 4 walks through the hills that are clearly marked by coded posts. Details of which Lothian bus to get from Edinburgh city centre to these walks are included below and on our Bus Route Guide:

Capital View Walk
From Hillend look out for the Castle posts for this fairly strenuous 3 mile walk which takes between 1 and 2 hours. Take in the magnificent views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. Bus numbers 4, 15 or 15A to Hillend.

Glencorse View Walk
An easy walk of 2 and a half miles which should take an hour and a half. From Flotterstone Visitor Centre follow the Heron marked posts. Head along the Glencorse burn to the reservoir. Watch out for bird life on the way. This route uses Stagecaoch buses from Edinburgh City - number 101 or 102 to Flotterstone.

Harlaw Woodland Walk
From Balerno walk up Harlaw Road for a mile to Harlaw Farm, turn right and at the end of the road you’ll find a car park. The Harlaw Woodland Walk starts here. Follow the Squirrel marked posts for 2 miles around the reservoir, enjoying a variety of woodland scenes. Especially alive in Spring and Autumn. Bus numbers 44 or 44A to Balerno.

Torduff Water Walk
This walk starts at Bonaly Country Park for a short 2-mile route around moorland and reservoirs. Torduff reveals much of its Victorian legacy and water birds are regularly seen. Don’t fail to check out the magnificent view across Edinburgh and beyond on the return trip! Bus numbers 10 or 16 to Bonaly.
