The ride follows pleasant lanes past Abercorn Church which is situated in charming wooded setting.

It continues to the magnificent Hopetoun House, where it makes the most of the quiet estate roads surrounding it.

After Kirkliston we join the old railway path to Newbridge and then use the cycle path beside the A89.

Passing as we head home the shale oil bings near Winchburgh the route then climbs into the Bathgate Hills giving great views south to the Penlands and north to the Ochils, the Trossachs, Ben Vorlich and Ben Ledi.

The route finishes with some exciting descents back into Linlithgow.

Terrain: Undulating as far as Hopetoun, then a good climb followed by descents. Beyond Ecclesmachan there is a stiff climb into the Bathgate hills, then mostly downhill back to Linlithgow. Part of the route is off-road on cycles paths, the rest on mainly quiet minor roads. Click here for larger map.
